I'm so sick of all this B.S.

Pretty soon we'll be seeing "Save the e-animals!" signs...

Its just a GAME! No animals/people is being hurt. People take things way to seriously.

Ivory trade is mainly illegal

Killing a cow is considered a mortal sin in some parts of the world..GW contains leather..

I know that argument is a bit far fetched but it works under the same principle.

I agree, honestly, it's just a game. And you choose whether or not to play. It doesn't affect real life situations of ivory farming/panda extinctions in anyway. Unless, say some kid getting hyped up about the game decides to go RL ivory farming/lvling up on pandas.. in which case he will prolly get mauled by elephants/pandas anyways.

Wrath has hit this on the head anyways...Ivorybows exsist in-game there is no reason why a ivory craft mat cant exsist.

Yea as long as you're not killing Elephants to GET the ivory.. which your not. So in the world of Guild Wars.. you could just state that ivory comes from something else. Plus couldn't they have baby elephants or young elephants that don't have the horns yet. Or simply make them without the horns if they were so concerned.

Maybe there are Helephabits or whatever that thing is in Winne the pooh.

lol... good point.. I think it has more to do with where ANet is trying to sell the game. Without mentioning any names, I think that 'places where Ivory is abundant' aren't high on their list... Also, since the Great Panda is only native to one national area unlike things that produce ivory, the moderator has a point when he mentioned some places allow hunting for ivory and that has to be taken into account. The question would be whether the cranes that were modified are just native to one area. They may be.

I, personally, think that there will be ivory in-game, possibly along the same lines as jade/amber. Otherwise, how could you craft armour made of ivory. Quite frankly, the desert continent is probably not one of NCSoft's target areas, either, so it probably won't stop them. I think the paragon armours are going to look great though :-) Hey, maybe they have something like Oliphants :-)

There's already every other part of the animal: fur, eyes, bones, why not have the ivory?

I've already made what comments I'm going to make in the thread in the Dev Forums. I'm just here to say, "Panda/Crane Syndrome". Freakin awesome label! I will so use that phrase to describe PC of any kind! I hate PC. And not the Mac's evil twin, but political correctnessnessicity.

Sorry, I'm feeling a bit goofball today

Save the Heffalump!!!

Back on topic, I actually hadn't given the existence of ivory any thought at all. Ivory could be something that just drops randomly, from a broad range of monsters. That would keep some people from getting irked. Really, though, I don't care, as long as no heffalumps are harmed in the farming of this fake material.

They didn't want pandas because it was a salute to the Chinese government policy of not allowing pandas to be killed, real or simulated. They want this game to be able to sell in Hong Kong (a Chinese-ruled SAR).

Ivory is a material used historically to make wares. I don't think pandas have. We have leather hides; why not ivory?

It isnt a double standard, its getting your game BANNED vs having some animal huggers send you angry letters.
There are no elephants in China, so I doubt the Chinese would give a rat's ass. After all, we're talking about a country where you can get powdered endangered rhino penises to use as an aphrodisiac (which as far as I know, does not work).

I suppose enemies who already have ivory armor/weapons could drop it, or something that salvages into it.

I don't think Ivory would be a problem. I've seen it being a trade material in a few RTS games, most recently in the Caesar 4 Demo. So I doubt Ivory in game would be considered a problem by animal rights groups.

Well, considering I collect Ivory Bows whenever I see them, I think it's safe to say there will be ivory.

Also, the panda argument is trying to infer too far. It is legally protected in the People's Republic of China to the point that any events resulting in even the depiction of its death is punishable by prison time.

While the ivory trade is unfortunate (especially as synthetic ivory really sucks, too) it is not on the level of the panda debate. It's not illegal to show someone killing an elephant, as they do it on Discovery all the time. Besides, there have already been multi-tusked animals shown in PC Gamer, it seems they have no shortage of ivory in Elona.

I don't think there will be any legal issues preventing the portrayal of ivory, and the only people that will complain are the ones that complain about everything else.

I think it all comes down to that they allow people to kill virtual people in games, hell even mutalate them, so why can't you kill virtual animals... but if they're going to get really pissy about it for whatever reason I guess just adding a spare nose or something to a panda or elephant would change it enough to save us all from a really bad headache. Or even better, kill two birds with one stone and make a Pandasaurus! It resembles the cuteness of pandas and has ivory tusks that you can farm!

They all seem to be forgetting somthing: its a game. I Don't see PETA Jumping up and down because you can go out and kill black bears, Cranes, Tigers in Factions / Prof.

Not having Ivery in Nightfall because of Animal Rights Would eb Compelatly Assinine. Why nottake out all pets from the game also?
